Mario Montoya

Guitarist

Mario Montoya, born in Madrid in 1974, began to play the guitar at the age of 11 years old in his family. His uncle, Ramón Montoya, and his brother, were his teachers.

Professional guitarist since the age of sixteen.

He founded the group Cañorroto with the guitarists Jesús de Rosario, David Cerreduela and Antonio Amador on vocals. Throughout his professional life he has formed part of large companies. He joined the company of Sara Baras, of which he is a founding member with more than 2000 performances all over the world, and composer in all the works created, with the exception of Mariana Pineda, in which he performs orchestrated music under the direction of Manolo Sanlúcar.

He has shared the stage with internationally renowned artists such as José Carreras, Chavela Vargas, Tim Ries, Andreas Prittwitz… and renowned flamenco artists such as Enrique Morente, Diego el Cigala, José Mercé, Rafael Farina, among others.

Mario Montoya has participated as a musician in Carlos Saura’s feature films “Iberia” (2005), “Flamenco Flamenco” (2010) and “El Barbero de Picasso” by Enrique Morente.

In 2010 he joined Rafael Amargo’s company in the shows “Solo & Amargo” and “Poeta en Nueva York”.

In 2014 he participated with the dancer Eduardo Guerrero in the posthumous tribute that the legendary dancer Vladimir Vasiliev made to his wife Ekaterina Maximova in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, being the first flamenco guitar to be heard in the temple of dance par excellence.

International guitar player

He has also performed on the most important stages, such as the Teatro Real in Madrid, Opera House of National Grand Theatre in Beijing, Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall in London, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Teresa Carreño in Caracas, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, El Liceo in Barcelona, and a long etcetera.

She is currently studying for a degree in Musicology at the Complutense University of Madrid and is a teaching member of the Centro Superior de Estudios del Flamenco “UFLAMENCO” in Madrid, the Escuela De Música Creativa, and the Escuela de Nuevas Músicas, and combines her teaching work with regular performances in the tablaos of Madrid, such as Cardamomo and Tablao 1911.
