There’s a much-repeated myth: that in August Madrid empties out and there’s nothing to do. False. It’s true that many locals leave and some businesses close for a few weeks, but the city doesn’t switch off: it changes pace. The streets breathe, the centre fills with street parties and, when the sun goes down, Madrid becomes one of the best summer plans there is. And 2026 won’t be any different.
Madrid in August: the myth of the empty city
Yes, it’s hot, but August has an advantage madrileños know well: the city is clearer. Less traffic, shorter queues at the museums, terraces without the crush and a relaxed atmosphere that’s unthinkable at other times of year.
It’s the ideal month to stroll unhurried through the Madrid of the Austrias, sit on a terrace in La Latina in the late afternoon or visit the Prado or the Reina Sofía without the usual crowds. The trick is to organise around the heat: mornings for the street, the middle hours indoors and, above all, save the night, which is when the city comes alive.
Must-do events and plans in Madrid in August 2026
In August, the real plan begins at sunset. The temperature drops, the squares fill up and the city changes face completely. An almost obligatory option is Veranos de la Villa, the great Madrid summer festival, which in 2026 runs until the end of August with concerts, dance, open-air cinema, theatre and plenty of flamenco spread across the city. Many of its events are free and take place in settings as beautiful as Conde Duque or the gardens of the centre.
If there’s a moment when Madrid shows its most traditional side, it’s the first fortnight of August. Three street parties in a row fill the centre with paper lanterns, chotis and Manila shawls. They start with San Cayetano (around 7 August, the Rastro and Embajadores area), continue with San Lorenzo (around the 10th, in Lavapiés) and culminate with the biggest and most famous, the Virgen de la Paloma (the 15th, in La Latina). In 2026 the cycle runs from 5 to 17 August. Streets closed to traffic, neighbours dancing cheek to cheek and a village atmosphere inside the big city. It’s the most authentic plan you can experience in Madrid in August, and free on top of that.
And for the hottest hours, the listings never stop. The big Gran Vía musicals keep running all through August, and the theatres maintain programming designed for the summer. It’s the perfect way to combine culture with a break from the heat.

Flamenco in Madrid in August: the plan that never fails
Here’s the key many don’t know: while part of the city closes for holidays, flamenco doesn’t take August off. At Cardamomo there’s a show every night, in the middle of August too and on the 15th as well. It’s probably the most complete plan of the month: a top-level show, in an air-conditioned room —much appreciated—, in the heart of the centre and just minutes from the La Latina street parties.
It’s the plan that works when all the others depend on the heat or the day. You can start the afternoon strolling through traditional Madrid, have tapas for dinner and round off the night with live flamenco. Heat outside, art inside. Check the August flamenco programme and book ahead, as capacity is limited.
