Flamenco theatre in Madrid: where to see the real thing

There are plenty of places to watch flamenco in Madrid. Far fewer where you actually feel it. For 30 years we’ve been that corner of the city centre locals head to when they want the real thing, not the postcard version. This is our flamenco theatre, and you’re invited.
A tablao is, technically speaking, a flamenco theatre: a stage venue devoted to performances of this art form. Cardamomo has been exactly that in central Madrid for thirty years.
The flamenco theatre where those in the know go
Special things happen here. The artists who really matter, the ones with duende, want to perform on our stage. Why? Because the respect for the art is absolute and the connection with the audience is electric.
And it’s not just us saying it. Ask any Madrid local who loves flamenco where they’d go to feel it up close, and plenty will say Cardamomo. We’re that slightly secret flamenco theatre — though not so secret any more — where authenticity is in the air, well off the tourist trail. It’s the flamenco we like ourselves, the one we share with neighbours and friends.
Thirty years is a lot of flamenco. We’ve watched it change, watched new faces arrive, and still the essential thing is intact every night. We’re not a museum: we’re a flamenco theatre that’s very much alive.
What a night in our flamenco theatre feels like
What happens on that stage for an hour is hard to put into words. It’s pure life: guitars that speak straight into your ear, cajones you feel in your chest, dancers who give everything, voices that raise the hair on your arms. Nothing here is faked.
The line-up changes every week, so no two nights are the same. You’re close enough to hear the dancer breathing between footwork bursts. You can’t reproduce that in a big theatre.
Can’t tell a soleá from a bulería? Doesn’t matter. You’ll get it live — but if you’d rather turn up having done your homework, here’s our guide to the styles of flamenco dance.
A flamenco theatre with soul in central Madrid
Cardamomo is more than chairs and a stage. It’s a place with history and that certain something: the warmth of somewhere with a past, and an energy that’s contagious. We want you to feel at home from the moment you walk in, like visiting friends who happen to be very flamenco.
You’ll find us at Calle Echegaray 15, steps from Puerta del Sol, in the heart of Madrid’s literary quarter.
The only flamenco theatre in Madrid recommended by The New York Times
Not a figure of speech. Cardamomo features in 36 Hours in Madrid, The New York Times guide. And they’re not alone:
Cardamomo is the real deal, catering to a crowd that knows its bulerías from its soleás.

What your night at Cardamomo looks like
We want your only job to be letting go. When you arrive we welcome you with a smile and your first drink — on the house. Our team will be around if you need anything, without hovering. We’ll walk you to your seat, and that’s it: enjoy.
And if you fancy it, afterwards you can say hello to the artists and get a photo with them. A good souvenir of the night.
Come and experience live flamenco at Cardamomo, and find out why locals call it their flamenco theatre.
